Pre-printing process emerged in the United States in the 1980s. At that time, two cola companies consumed much corrugated packaging for bottled beverage. In order to improve production efficiency, the printing press suppliers developed the equipment that can print colored pattern on the roller paper, which drove the rapid development of flexo printing. The application of flexo printing technology to pre-print patterns on wide roller paper quickly gained popularity. Today, the number of pre-printed corrugated boxes in the US accounted for 30% of the total number. The ratio in Europe where there is huge number of SMEs is 15%. China's first four-color flexo printing machine was introduced by Shenzhen Lukka Group in 1997, mainly providing colored green packaging for electronics, telecommunications, footwear, and other bulk products. In Europe, the flexo corrugated box accounts for more than 80-90%, but flexo pre-printed corrugated box only accounts for 30% or below, with gradually slowing pace of development. Pre-printing is a new technology in China with some room for development.
It is understood that pre-printed corrugated boxes are with high overlay accuracy, saturated printing ink, fresh and solid color. The printing and coating process are completed at the same time. The physical indicators of these corrugated boxes are over 30% higher than offset printed corrugated boxes produced with the same material, but the production costs are significantly lower. As an advanced printing technology, preprinting has a demand for advanced equipment and technology and also puts forward higher requirements for corresponding materials. It not only requires corrugated board with high compression strength and unbreakable performance, but also requires better smoothness of the paper, so as to achieve good printability.
The protective property of pre-printed corrugated box is more prominent. It not only protects corrugated box from damage, but also increase the compressive strength of corrugated boxes by 10%, which may better insure the quality of products during transport. In addition, pre-printed corrugated boxes are with high overlay accuracy, saturated printing ink, fresh and solid color. The coating after pre-printing technology may reach the same effect as coating after offset printing. After long-distance transport, storage, and handling process, it will maintain good print quality. Moreover, the pre-printing process is particularly suitable for the packaging of milk, beer, and high-end beverage.
